If you’ve never set foot on Useppa Island, you are in for a treat! Occupied over the years by Calusa Indians, pirates, Spanish explorers and Cuban fisherman, Useppa Island is also the former home of Florida land tycoon, Barron Collier.
Today’s unique private enclave offers not only a fascinating historical past, but also peaceful surroundings, an escape from the rat-race with many ways to unwind and a host of activities to pursue. With lots of recreation, fitness and fun, staying active is easy!
Transportation is by golf cart, bicycle and feet. Well-maintained tennis and bocce courts, croquet lawns, and a lovely private community pool, resting high on a ridge overlooking Pine Island Sound. There is also a small but well-equipped gym. Yoga classes and tennis lessons can be scheduled. Pick-up games of bocce ball, tennis, croquet and volleyball can be called within a moment’s notice – for all ages. Then, there’s fishing; off the dock, in the flats or offshore. If you hook-up, it’s a real charge. Heart rate…UP!
Walking and swimming are great cardio for any age or fitness level. The historic “Pink Path” runs the length of the island and is perfect for a leisure (or power) walk, jog or run. You’ll see your share of nature along the way– our Great Horned Owl family, Osprey, Ibis, Bald Eagles, ancient Live Oak, Banyan and Gumbo Limbo trees. Plus, there’s a lush variety of native tropical flowering plants offering stimulation for your visual and physical senses.
Kayaking and Paddle Boarding in the pristine bay waters surrounding Useppa is an exhilarating adventure. Maneuvering through the water is not only great fun, but improves cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength. If you are lucky, a manatee, sea turtle or dolphin may just join you. Now, that will accelerate your breathing.
Useppa is so unique and beautiful, you will be driven to find all of her secrets. Don’t forget to search for Useppa’s Grotto. Some say it’s haunted.
