4 Nautical Miles West of Pine Island – Just a Short Boat Ride From Useppa Island
With nine miles of beautiful beaches and acres of pine forest, oak-palm hammocks and mangrove swamps, this 2,426 acre barrier island park is a pristine Gulf Coast paradise.
Accessible only by private boat or ferry, Cayo Costa visitors may see manatee and dolphin, along with an assortment of coastal birds. An array of recreational activities include hiking and picnic areas, biking, camping, fishing, snorkeling and swimming. An amphitheater provides educational programs about the island’s important ecology and history.
Take a day trip with ferry services available from numerous locations via Captiva Cruises or from Pine Island via Tropic Star Ferry. From Useppa Island, you can journey to Cayo Costa via kayak, or private boat. Boaters may stay overnight at the bayside park dock, with restroom facilities. Reservations required.
For the small boat or kayak, there’s a very special area at Cayo Costa called the Tunnel, a canopied tidal creek that was once a hideout for smugglers and Calusa Indians.
Amphitheater
Located in the day-use area, the amphitheater features programs that provide a variety of educational information and lectures relative to the island’s natural resources and wildlife, along with the history of the island and ecological importance.
Beach
With nearly 9.5 miles of pristine beach on the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll find the perfect location for shelling, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, hiking and more.
Shelling
A visitor favorite, collectors can find all types of shells along the beach during low tide.
Wildlife Nesting
Sea turtles and many species of shorebirds use these beaches to nest. Bird nesting season is generally late winter through spring. Sea turtle nesting season begins in May and continues through October. All nests are protected by law and are well marked.
Tram Service
A scheduled tram service runs between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Cabins
The rustic one-room cabins offer a day on the beach and an evening gazing at the stars. Located near the beach and nature trails, each cabin sleeps up to 6 people. There’s no running water, or electricity.
Pets
Pets are allowed in the park on a leash, but prohibited on the beaches and in the cabin area. Service animals are welcome in all areas.
